Pioneering Interactive Learning in Sudan: Reflections on the July 2025 H5P Workshop
by: Dr Taysir Kashif
What a landmark moment for medical education in Sudan we experienced on July 26 and 27, 2025! Our online workshop on H5P, the free and open-source interactive learning tool, was not just an event; it was a bold, pioneering leap forward. Together, educators and learners from Sudan and beyond gathered to explore, innovate, and ignite a new chapter in how medical education can flourish, even amid challenges.
Breaking New Ground: Sudan’s First Systematic H5P
Workshop
From the very start, this workshop carried a spirit of pride and promise. For years, I have believed that technology can be a powerful equaliser, a way to unlock education’s true potential despite limited resources, unstable internet, and infrastructural hurdles. This workshop was the first organised, systematic effort to bring that vision to life in Sudan.
What made this event truly special was its remarkably diverse and influential audience, including key stakeholders and decision-makers shaping medical education policies; professors, associate and assistant professors leading academic innovation; doctors from various specialities enriching the dialogue with clinical insight; postgraduate and undergraduate students eager to engage with new learning tools.
Over two inspiring days, participants joined us from Sudan and many other countries, showing how this
movement is growing far beyond borders. The enthusiasm was infectious, the
discussions vibrant, and the sense of community strong.

Workshop Highlights: From Fundamentals to Practical
Applications, A Celebration of Progress
What an incredible journey those two days were! This
workshop was more than just a learning event; it was a ground-breaking
celebration of what’s possible when passion meets innovation in Sudan’s medical
education.
We began by unfolding the very essence of H5P, what it is, why it matters so deeply in our context, and how it works. Participants were captivated as we explored the powerful variety of interactive content types, from quizzes to branching scenarios and interactive videos, each thoughtfully connected to Bloom’s Taxonomy. This made clear how H5P isn’t just a tool; it’s a bridge to meaningful, active learning at every cognitive level.
If you want to relive these insights, my post “Choosing the Right H5P Content Type for Each Bloom’s Stage”
offers an inspiring deep dive.
The energy in the room (virtual as it was!) was palpable as
we discussed Sudan’s unique educational challenges. Power outages, low
bandwidth, and limited resources these are real hurdles, but as the workshop
showed, they are far from insurmountable. With creativity, determination, and
tools like H5P, we are rewriting the story of medical education in Sudan.
One of the proudest moments was unveiling the H5P Library website, a true game-changer. This freely accessible hub empowers educators
to craft, customise, and share rich interactive content without needing complex
technical permissions or expensive software. It embodies our mission: making
quality education inclusive and accessible for all.
This workshop wasn’t just about knowledge transfer; it was a
powerful call to action and community-building. Together, we celebrated how far
we’ve come and embraced the exciting journey ahead, lighting the way for
educators and learners to thrive in a digital, interactive future.
Why This Matters: Empowering Sudanese Medical Education
Sudan’s medical education faces many barriers, including ongoing conflict, limited faculty, infrastructure issues, and fluctuating internet access. Yet, this workshop proved how technology like H5P can be a beacon of hope. It supports active learning, personalised feedback, and clinical readiness in ways traditional methods cannot.
Overcoming Challenges Together: Solutions for Realities
on the Ground
We shared openly about real barriers, lack of admin access
on platforms, intermittent connectivity, and unfamiliarity with new tools. But
as the workshop highlighted, these are challenges to be met, not roadblocks to
stop us.
Solutions like the Lumi App for offline access and
the collaborative spirit embodied in the H5P Library website mean educators
and learners can keep moving forward. This echoes the practical approaches I
outlined in “Flexible and Microlearning Formats for Busy Clinicians.”
Together, we’re proving that with creativity, collaboration, and commitment, we can turn constraints into opportunities.
Looking Ahead: Lighting the Path Forward
The July workshop is just the start of a journey that
promises to reshape medical education in Sudan. We are building momentum,
expanding training, growing the H5P Library, and empowering educators to
become trainers themselves.
This movement is about more than technology; it’s about cultivating a culture of innovation, accessibility, and collaboration in health professions education.
Join the Movement: Your Invitation to Engage and Innovate
To all educators, students, and innovators, I invite you to explore the H5P Library website, try interactive content, and share your experiences. Your voice and creativity are essential to this vibrant community.
