The Spark: Discovering a New Way to Teach and Learn

My journey in medical education has always been driven by a deep passion for digital learning and educational technology. To me, technology isn’t just a tool; it’s a powerful bridge that connects students to knowledge in ways traditional teaching methods often cannot. This is especially important in developing countries like Sudan, where educational resources can be limited.

I searched for innovative ways to make learning more interactive and engaging for my students. Then, one day, I discovered H5P, a tool that promised to transform static lessons into dynamic, interactive experiences.

The Moment H5P Changed Everything

H5P instantly captured my imagination. I explored everything I could, from H5P.com, H5P.org, and Moodle plugins, to the Lumi desktop editor and Lumi cloud platform. I was amazed at the flexibility and creativity these tools allowed. Suddenly, creating quizzes, interactive videos, and engaging assignments wasn’t just a dream, it was possible and practical.

Taking the First Step: Introducing H5P to My Students

In February 2023, I decided it was time to put this passion into action. I introduced H5P to my master’s students in health professions education, crafting a full set of interactive activities for their first course, “Teaching and Learning.” The response was overwhelmingly positive. Students found the lessons more engaging and said they transformed their understanding and retention of the material.

To ensure everyone could use H5P confidently, I organized orientation and training sessions on creating H5P content using Lumi and Moodle. These workshops helped students become more aware of H5P’s full potential.

Expanding the Vision: Taking It a Step Further

Encouraged by the success of the first course, I integrated H5P even more deeply during the second semester’s “Educational Technology” course. This time, I empowered my students to move beyond simply “knowing” and “understanding” to “applying” their knowledge through online group work, hands-on assignments, and discussion forums. I even integrated H5P-based tasks into their formative and summative assessments, making interactive content creation a key part of their learning journey. This approach enriched their experience and demonstrated how educational technology can be applied in real-world medical education.

Overcoming Challenges: Building the H5P Library

From my experience working with students in Sudan, I found that not all educational platforms are ready for H5P content, some require special plugins or admin access, which can be a barrier. Inconsistent platform access and low user confidence with H5P apps also limit engagement. This may be true in other places as well.

Determined to overcome these challenges, I relied on free, easily accessible tools to build the H5P Library website. Using free tools was essential because many educators and students face limited budgets, lack technical support, and have restricted access to paid software. More importantly, this experience serves as a model to show that meaningful achievements and innovations can be made even with simple, widely available resources.

This approach ensured the H5P Library is open to anyone, allowing direct online interaction with H5P activities and making learning simpler, more affordable, and accessible to everyone.

To my knowledge, this was the first organised and methodological use of H5P in medical education in Sudan, along with the country’s first dedicated H5P library project. I share this not only with pride, but with hope, that interactive learning becomes a recognised and effective standard across Sudan and beyond.

The Power of Community: Gratitude for Support

This journey wouldn’t have been possible without my incredible teachers, colleagues, and students. Their encouragement and feedback helped shape the H5P Library into a collaborative and vibrant platform.

The H5P Library: A New Beginning for Medical Education in Sudan

Today, the H5P Library stands as Sudan’s pioneering digital hub of interactive quizzes, videos, dialog cards, and more, all carefully aligned with official lecture notes to ensure accuracy and relevance.

Though still in early development, this platform is growing fast with exciting projects on the horizon.

I believe the journey to transform medical education is long, but the spark has been lit. While the H5P Library is still under development, together we can continue building it into a powerful resource to make learning more interactive, accessible, and impactful.
